Seasonal Climate Guide for Croatia

Off-Season (October to April)

During the off-season, the temperature fluctuates between 7 °C and 15 °C during the day and 0 °C and 8 °C at night. Although, January is the coldest month in Croatia, with very little precipitation. In January, for instance, there is only 139 mm of precipitation, and this is spread over 13 days. Hence, sub-zero temperatures are rare. The following months are characterized by rising temperatures, and occasionally high humidity. Towards the end of the year, the temperatures gradually decrease to about 0 °C. Additionally, the hours of sunshine reduce to 9 hours a day. Note the increasing levels of humidity, which can reach up to 85 %.

Peak Season (May to September)

The peak season is known for warm temperatures well above 20 °C. This means that you can go for a hike or stroll through the cities in May. The months of July and August are perfect for a beach holiday, where temperatures are no higher than 29 °C. This is also a great time to explore water sports such as white water rafting, diving, water-skiing or parasailing. The driest month is August, with 14 hours of sunshine per day and only 38 mm of precipitation spread over 3 days. In contrast to the off-season, there is very little humidity in the peak season. Neither precipitation nor humidity start to increase until late September/early October.

Exception: The Best Time to Visit for Dolphin Watching

Dolphins are protected animal species, as such, there are few things to consider. For starters, it is forbidden to swim with them in the wild or chase them on the water. However, observation is allowed. Dolphins are frequently spotted in Croatia, especially near the islands Losinj and Cres. The best month to watch these magnificent mammals is June. Additionally, make sure to choose a company that is mindful of animal rights when booking a tour. The tour itself must also be structured in an animal-friendly way.

Conclusion: The Best Time to Visit Croatia

Overall, Croatia is a great country to visit at any time of the year, since the weather is mild and pleasant all year round. Most of its tourist attractions bear historical and religious significance. For example, the historic cities of Umag and Porec on the West Coast.
